formica – laminated paper sheets

formica – laminated paper sheets
formica – laminated paper sheets

Laminated paper sheets are produced by soaking paper in resin and forming it under high pressure and high temperature, and the visible result is a printed surface. The laminated paper sheets are made in three passes.
Since the base material is paper, in the first pass it is still without print. In this phase the character of the paper is accentuated through folds in the paper as well as the arising overlays. In the second pass, recycled paper is merged (1.2).The laminating process accentuates the varying colours of the recycled paper. Because the second pass does not use the usual phenol-resin soaked base papers and melamine-resin soaked Deco-paper, the result is transparent paper. Artificial grass pieces between the different layers generate a depth effect due to lamination (2.1). Depending on the resin and the transparent paper a variety of colours can be achieved (2.2). In the third series, instead of using deco-paper, I used textile with metal rivets. In order not to damage the press you have to use paper as padding. Like this you get simultaneously 2 sheets, a negative sheet (3.1) and a positive sheet (3.2) with a distinctive surface.

I won the second prize in this international competition due to my results of this project.
